What services does MHRH offer?

MHRH offers long term hospital care; mental health and psychiatric services; substance abuse prevention, education and a wide range of drug and alcohol treatment services; and residential, day programs and support services for people with developmental disabilities. MHRH’s primary service focus is on eligible adult Rhode Islanders.

What specific services are available, how do I determine eligibility, where are they located and is there any cost?

The Eleanor Slater Hospital offers psychiatric, psycho-geriatric, respiratory and certain other long-term hospital care at its Cranston Site; the Zambarano Unit, in Burrillville, offers long-term care for severely and chronically ill patients at a medical step up from traditional nursing home services. The hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Behavioral Healthcare services include the community mental health system and outpatient, residential and detoxification services for substance dependence.

The Division of Developmental Disabilities operates the state-run RICLAS (RI Community Living and Supports) Program, which provides a range of residential services for the developmentally disabled; and supports and monitors a system of private residential and support service providers located around the state.

MHRH is committed to providing the best treatment/service options in the least restrictive setting. Specific programs, eligibility and any associated costs vary by program area and service.

Zambarano was founded in 1905 as the Rhode Island Sanatorium for the treatment of patients suffering from tuberculosis, known as the "white plague" or "consumption". Today, Zambarano is the long-term care unit of the Eleanor Slater Hospital. Learn more about Zambarano at our history page.
